Commonsense Home Security

the idea!

Orangeville, ON (Harold Doan and Sons Ltd.) Today, more than ever, we are exposed to the risk of criminal activity. We can reduce the risk by following some commonsense precautions.

DO Install quality locks on your doors that are secure enough to withstand brute force or lock picking attempts. Be certain to always lock your doors, whether it be when leaving your home for a vacation or for just a quick trip down to the corner store.

DO install appropriate additional security devices. In conjunction with locks, you should also consider installing security devices like a burglar alarm.

DO make sure that your duplicate keys are protected. Most homeowners have spare keys made and leave them with immediate family or trusted friends. They should be trustworthy to always keep your keys safe.

DO have emergency numbers on speed dial. If your community does not have 911 service, you should have the numbers to the police and fire department on your speed dial in case of an emergency.

DON’T immediately open the door to a deliveryman, ask to see his credentials first. Always be careful when dealing with strangers, even though you know they’re coming.

DON’T tip off potential intruders that there’s no one home. When leaving for somewhere, especially if you don’t know when you’ll be back, try to leave indicators that there’s someone home, like leaving a porch light on.

DON’T advertise your possessions. Keep your blinds or drapes closed and discreetly dispose of the boxes for your newly bought equipment.

DON’T leave valuables like jewelry or large amounts of cash unprotected. Keep them in a safe or safety deposit box.

Always be vigilant and keep home security on your mind. Home security doesn’t stop when you leave your home. Think about it wherever you are.
